Holy Magick is a Brighton-based psychedelic dream-rock band formed by producer Dom Keen (ex-Death in Vegas, Dark Horses) and singer-songwriter Siobhan Lynch (ex Interscope Records artist). The sextet is completed by Steve Ingham (drummer), Luis Bradshaw (bass), Lewis Magill (guitarist) and Thom Carter (keyboardist). Comparable to Cigarettes After Sex and Mazzy Star, they are known for their beautifully intense music and unpredictable, energetic on stage performances.
The name Holy Magick came from Keen’s perspective of what music is. In an interview, front woman Lynch described the band as an unlikely fusion between her own punk background as a songwriter and Keen’s psychedelic rock aesthetic as a musician. She mentioned that although they have contrasted and chaotic skills and tastes, they were always able to agree that their biggest influences came from the late seventies. This can be heard in their music and it is quite a treat to experience on vinyl.
This month’s discovery album was released in May of 2019, which is made up of 13 brilliant tracks. With the album art being a magical looking mushroom, one can get a good indication as to what to expect. Indeed this is an album filled to the brim with big sounds, kaleidoscopic moments and music that is far from the mainstream (in the best possible way). This self titled album by Holy Magick does not disappoint and the band themselves describe it as ‘a collection of Nihilistic anti-romance ballads’ - which sounds bizarre, but all falls into place when the record gets going. With such a wide array of musicians, all with so much to give, Holy Magick comes together to form an interesting, trippy but complete piece of work. The opening track ‘Even Though’ has to be one of our favourites. You cannot deny the energy of this track, it builds so beautifully and sticks in your head for days. Listen out for ‘It’s Your Money’ and ‘Panic!’ too. This edgy album cannot be faulted, with a perfect combination of slowed-down and ramped-up, we hope you enjoy discovering Holy Magick.
