Irish Record Feature: Artist Overview
If you’re from the Emerald Isle, The Cranberries will not need much of an introduction. The iconic rock band from Limerick formed in 1989 and very quickly rose to fame. Initially made up by lead singer Niall Quinn, guitarist Noel Hogan, bassist Mike Hogan and drummer Fergal Lawler, the extraordinary talent that was Dolores O'Riordan joined in 1990 and took over as the front woman. O'Riordan happened to be the catalyst who would skyrocket them so quickly to popularity, thanks to her powerful stage presence and meaningful, socially conscious lyrics. They are ranked as one of the best-selling alternative acts of the 90s, won and were nominated for countless awards and went on several world tours to perform in front of crowds of up to 20,000 people each night. The Cranberries soared to heights for many reasons, but most notably thanks to Dolores. She was a truly rare artist who sadly passed away in early 2018, which naturally led to the band’s decision to not continue. For fans, we are left with their musical legacy, which has a host of treasures to enjoy and add to our must have record collections.
Irish Record Feature: Album Overview
Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? was the band’s first studio album, released in March 1993. Recorded at Windmill Lane Studios, it hit number one in both Ireland and the UK, and spent 86 weeks in the charts. But something you may not know, is that the initial release of this album didn’t garner the same attention further afield. That is until around the time that the Irish band went on tour to support Suede, an English rock band. MTV caught wind of The Cranberries’ raw talent and began playing their videos heavily, which resulted in a shocking move to reverse the running order of the tour’s shows and The Cranberries replaced Suede as the headliners. From there, the album and its singles finally got the airtime that they deserved. Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? is an incredible and must have vinyl record for any collection. The title itself requires audiences to listen up and understand that this band may be from a tiny place on a small island, but that they have a big sound, influential ideas and haunting lyrics to bring to the mainstream. With legendary tracks like ‘Zombie’ and ‘Linger’ gracing this album, we simply had to include it in this month’s vinyl record subscription delivery. What’s more, this edition is the 25th anniversary reissue released in 2018, remastered at Abbey Road under the supervision of the band's lead guitarist and co-songwriter Noel Hogan.
